(Note: This functionality is only available in Doc-To-Help 2012 V2, which you can download here.)
When we introduced NetHelp 2.0 last August, it was an exciting time for Doc-To-Help. NetHelp had always been one of the most flexible and customizable web-based outputs in the market, which made the next generation (NetHelp 2.0) a logical extension. Customers would have the ability to customize and extend their NetHelp outputs without limitations; they were even given the ability to completely overhaul the output and make it entirely their own. From a development standpoint, NetHelp 2.0 gave us the ability to provide greater functionality, more flexibility, and the ability to integrate with other technologies by tweaking or adding some code.
This has allowed us to integrate with Google Analytics, Google Translate, easily add right-to-left support, localized outputs for Chinese and Japanese, as well as adding integration with Disqus which enables your users to leave comments and rate topics.
But, what we were hearing from customers is that all of the coding that they were required to do was keeping them from taking advantage of all the customization options that NetHelp 2.0 afforded them. They were looking for a more straightforward, easier to use WYSIWYG designer that would update the necessary code in their themes in real time.
That’s exactly what we added in 2012 V2 and it looks like this (legend describes where you need to click to change the various elements of the theme):
When you click in any area of the new Theme Designer (topic bar, header, contents window, etc), the property list will change according to what you’ve selected. You can also select individual elements of any area, such as buttons in the topic bar, and change just those.
The new Theme Designer makes it easy to:
- Add/Remove/Change buttons on the topic bar.
- Change the color scheme of your NetHelp using the Add Style Sheet button (#4) so that it matches your company’s branding or your application’s color scheme.
- Adjust the header size and add your company’s logo.
- Add/Remove/Change localization settings.
As with anything involving design and personal preferences/aesthetics, the best way to create a theme that is just right for you is to start fresh with a new theme and dive right in. For more information on how to use the new Theme Designer, see Using the NetHelp 2.0 Theme Designer, NetHelp 2.0 Theme Designer Settings, and Customizing NetHelp 2.0 Themes in the documentation.
