Here is a blog which provides different approaches for applying Auto Numbering to NetHelp and HTML targets in Doc-To-Help as reflected in the image below

Following are the ways through which Auto Numbering can be applied in in NetHelp and HTML :

  1. Applying Numbering to Heading Styles in Source Documents
  2. Using Source Template with Numbering Heading Styles
  3. Using Updated Source Template in a New Project

Applying Numbering to Heading Styles in the Source Documents

  1. Apply the numbered heading styles in Source Word Document.
  2. ‘Keep outline numbers’ option in Project properties must be checked.
To check the  ‘Keep outline numbers’ option,
    - Open the Project tab
    - Click the Project ribbon group dialog box launcher.
    - The Project Settings dialog box will open
    - In Output options Group, check the option ‘Keep outline numbers’.
  3. Rebuild your project

Using Source Template with Numbering Heading Styles

If you want to change the Source Template in an existing project, then it will not be automatically attached to the source documents of the project.

In this case you should manually open each source word document in your D2H project and attach the right template (with automatically updated document styles).

  1. Open the existing D2H project.
  2. Open the word source document.
  3. With Word 2010, go to File> Option.
Observe : Word Options Dialog Box will open.
  4. Open ‘Add-Ins’ tab and select “Templates” in ‘Manage’ Drop Down.
  5. Click ‘GO’ button.
Observe : Templates and Add-ins dialog box will be opened.
  6. Attach the Custom Template in Document Template.
  7. Check ‘Automatically update documents styles’ check box and click ‘Apply’.
  8. Rebuild your project

Note : Please make sure that the  ‘Keep outline numbers’ option is checked in Project properties dialog box also.( Steps mentioned in Solution 1 above)

Using Updated Source Template in a New Project

  1. Create a new D2H project.
  2. In ‘New Project Wizard’, add your Template in ‘Select the Default Source Style Sets’. (As in the image below)
  3. Rebuild your project

Refer to the attached sample for complete implementation.
